Located just over an hour’s drive from Belgium’s capital city of Brussels is the superb Martin’s Rentmeesterij hotel. Situated in the heritage site and popular tourist destination of the Grand Commandery of Alden Biesen, the hotel was created in the Commandery’s 13th century estate agent’s house. Although a new contemporary wing now houses 69 guest rooms, there are still three junior suites that remain in the historical part of this charming property. All of the well equipped rooms feature flat-screen satellite TV, minibar and modern bathrooms with the choice of a rain shower or bath. A delicious breakfast is served each day in the restaurant with gorgeous views over the prairie garden and the orchard.
Inspired by classic Flemish cuisine, the menu at the stylish AKKO restaurant can be enjoyed overlooking the stunning Alden Biesen castle while the Knight’s Bar is the place to head to sample some of the hotel’s exquisite selection of local beers.
An impressive spa and wellness facility is complemented by an indoor swimming pool, thermal baths, Finnish sauna, hamman and relaxation area with wonderful views of the garden.
Not only is the region blessed with excellent golf courses to play but full of natural parks, orchards and bicycle paths to explore. The enchanting shops at the nearby town of Bilzen and village of Maasmechelen are well worth a visit on a non-golfing day!
There are 11 great golf courses in the Brussels and Waterloo region and all are worthy of playing however the closest is the Winge Golf & Country Club. This beautiful parkland golf course is set within a stunning estate around the 17th century castle of Winge. A little further afield just north of Brussels is the first Flemish golf club of Brabantse. At 6374 yards the golf course is not overly long but tree-lined fairways and water hazards add to the challenge that this course presents. A post-round drink in the majestic clubhouse, a former castle, will be your reward for negotiating this excellent layout!
